　　英语阅读（一）：

　　Nearly a week passed before the girl was able to explain what had happened to her. One afternoon she set out from the coast in a small boat and was caught in a storm. Towards evening， the boat struck a rock and the girl jumped into the sea. Then she swam to the shore after spending the whole night in the water. During that time she covered a distance of eight miles. Early next morning， she saw a light ahead. She knew she was near the shore because the light was high up on the cliffs. On arriving at the shore， the girl struggled up the cliff towards the light she had seen. That was all she remembered. When she woke up a day later， she found herself in hospital.

　　Yesterday afternoon Frank Hawkins was telling me about his experiences as a young man. Before he retired， Frank was the head of a very large business pany， but as a boy he used to work in a small shop. It was his job to repair bicycles and at that time he used to work fourteen hours a day. He saved money for years and in 1958 he bought a small workshop of his own. In his twenties Frank used to make spare parts for aeroplanes. At that time he had two helpers. In a few years the small workshop had bee a large factory which employed seven hundred and twenty-eight people. Frank smiled when he remembered his hard early years and the long road to success. He was still smiling when the door opened and his wife came in. She wanted him to repair their grandson's bicycle!

　　The expensive shops in a famous arcade near Piccadilly were just opening. At this time of the morning， the arcade was almost empty. Mr Taylor， the owner of a jewellery shop was admiring a new window display. Two of his assistants had been working busily since 8 o'clock and had only just finished. Diamond necklaces and rings had been beautifully arranged on a background of black velvet. After gazing at the display for several minutes， Mr Taylor went back into his shop.

　　The silence was suddenly broken when a large car， with its headlights on and its horn blaring， roared down the arcade. It came to a stop outside the jeweler's. One man stayed at the wheel while two others with black stockings over their faces jumped out and smashed the window of the shop with iron bars. While this was going on， Mr Taylor was upstairs. He and his staff began throwing furniture out of the window. Chairs and tables went flying into the arcade. One of the thieves was struck by a heavy statue， but he was too busy helping himself to diamonds to notice any pain. The raid was all over in three minutes， for the men scrambled back into the car and it moved off at a fantastic speed. Just as it was leaving， Mr Taylor rushed out and ran after it throwing ashtrays and vases， but it was impossible to stop the thieves. They had got away with thousands of pounds worth of diamonds.

　　Television has e into our lives for many years. We can nearly say that we can’t live happily without television. It can give us the latest information and news. It can open up our eyes and enlarge our knowledge. We can be entertained by the programs on television. Otherwise，we’ll be boring all day if there is no television. Television programs are attractive. After a whole day’s hard work， we can sit before the television enjoying ourselves. How wonderful it is!

　　However， television also does harm to people’s health. It’s bad for us to watch TV too long， especially bad for our eyes. Besides， watching TV may take the time to study or play on outside world. In short， television is good and we should make use of it appropriately.

　　然而，电视也会对人们的健康有害。长时光看电视对我们是不好的，异常是有损眼睛。此外，看电视可能会占据大部分学习或者出去玩的时光。总之，电视是好的，我们应当适当利用它。

　　He chases the fly. The fly es back again and sits on the old man’s nose again.

　　The monkey chases it away again and again. This happens five or six times. The monkey is very angry.

　　He jumps up， runs to the garden and picks up a large stone.

　　When the fly sits on the old man’s nose again， the monkey hits it hard with the stone. He kills the fly and breaks the old man’s nose.

　　A self-important lion in the jungle tried to make his mastery clear to all.

　　He was so confident that he paid no attention to the smaller animals and went right up to a bear. He asked the bear， "Who is the king of the jungle?" The bear replied， "Of course you are."

　　Then the lion asked a tiger the same question. The tiger replied with some reluctance1， "Of course you are." And then he went to ask an elephant. But the elephant would not allow the lion to do so. He suddenly took hold of the lion with his long nose and bounced2 the lion against a tree， leaving him bleeding3 and badly shaken up.

　　When the lion finally got up， he blamed the elephant and said: "Even if you couldn't answer my question， it's not necessary for you to act so rough4."

　　Stolen Turkey

　　Ducking into confession with a turkey in his arms， Brian said， "Forgive me， Father， for I have sinned. I stole this turkey to feed my family. Would you take it and settle my guilt?"

　　"Certainly not，" said the Priest. "As penance， you must return it to the one from whom you stole it."

　　What makes a home? Love and sympathy and confidence. It is a place where kindly affections exist among all the members of the family. The parents take good care of their children， and the children are interested in the activities of their parents. Thus all of them are bound together by affection， and they find their home to be the cheeriest place in the world.

　　高中英语阅读理解：Nobel Peace Prize

　　Most of us know about the Nobel Prize， especially the Nobel Peace Prize， but few of us know anything about the man who set them up. His name was Alfred Nobel. He was a great scientist and inventor himself. Besides， he had a big business. His business may surprise you. He made and sold explosives. His panies even made and sold weapons. Isn’t this something that surprises you? The man who made money from weapons should set up the Peace Prize?

　　Though Alfred Nobel had a lot of money from weapons， he hated war. He hoped that there would be no war in the world. He was one of the richest in Europe. When he died in 1896， he left behind him a lot of money and his famous will. According to his will， most of his money was placed in a fund. He wanted the interest from the fund to be used as prizes every year. We know them as the Nobel Prizes. The Nobel Prizes are international. Alfred Nobel wanted the winners to be chosen for their work， not the country they came from.

　　Alfred Nobel had given his whole life to his studies and work and to the benefits of mankind. He made money all by his own efforts， but he left the world share his wealth. His inventions and wealth stay with the world for ever.

　　I will always remember my mothers last few days in this world.

　　On February 14th，2000，my class went on a field trip to the beach. I had so much fun. When we returned to school，my teacher told me to go to the headmasters office. After that，we went to the hospital and waited. Time went slowly. Finally，we got to see our mother. It was terrible.

　　Today when I look back，I still miss my mother very much，but I know that I will live. My mother was a strong mother，who had the biggest heart. My mother was an angel walking on the earth. I will always remember her as living. When someone is asked who their hero (英雄) is，they usually say someone famous，like Michael Jordan or Britney Spears. When someone asks me who my hero is，I tell them，my mother. My mother lives every day. That is what makes her a true hero.

　　The word “horse-power” was first used two hundred years ago. James Watt from a worker?s family made the world first widely used steam engine. At first， he couldn't tell people how powerful it was， because there were no units at that time. Watt decided to find out how much work one strong horse could do in one minute. He named that unit one horse-power. In this way he could measure the work of his steam engine.

　　Flipped by the bird: Tiger ends up on its back after trying to leap up and catch featheredprey that had landed in its zoo enclosure.

　　Libby， from Houston in Texas， was visiting the park and photographing the tigers' feeding session.

　　She said: ‘The crowd burst out in a roar of laughter - it was during feeding time and several chickens were tossed at the tigers.’
